Troubleshootings

The problems and solutions that are often encountered in using EasyMPD.

  1. How to initialize?
There is a little hole in front of Alix case. And inside the hole there is a button. If you want to initialize EasyMPD configuration, push this button for 5 seconds after Alix finishes booting. Then Alix will set all configuration back to default and automatically reboot. You can use this button in case of network connection failure due to wrong IP address entered or missing WEB GUI password.

The default username is "root" and password is "easympd" for login of EasyMPD WEB GUI.

  2. Cannot open EasyMPD WEB GUI
    a. If the right end LED in front of Alix keeps on, it means Alix has failed to connect to network. You should check the connection between Alix and router. And if this LED keeps on after you set static IP address for Alix network configuration, it means you entered wrong IP address. In this case you should initialize EasyMPD configuration with the way mentioned above.
    b. You should make sure that the computer, smart phone or tablet PC you are using to open WEB GUI be connected to the same router that Alix is being connected to.
    c. All three LEDs in front of Alix should be blinking at the same time after 3 minutes Alix starts booting. If they are not blinking and only the left end LED stays on, it means there is a problem on CF memory and booting cannot progress. In this case, you should download and install EasyMPD again.

  3. There is no "Shutdown" or "Power off" menu in EasyMPD WEB GUI. How to power off Alix?
EasyMPD do not use CF memory after booting is finished except of configuration change. You can power off Alix without shutdown command because there is no reading or writing on CF memory. It does not harm CF memory in EasyMPD. Just put off the power from Alix. But you must not put power off from Alix during booting. If you use USB external HDD attached to Alix, you can power off Alix when there is no reading or writing on the HDD like file coping through network, music playing or DB Update.

  4. EasyMPD cannot find the network shared folder in my computer or NAS.
    a. There should be a wrong configuration in network file sharing in your Windows computer or NAS.
Go to see Windows XP file sharing.
Go to see Windows 7,8 file sharing.
    b. You should make sure that the computer or NAS be connected to the same router that Alix is being connected to.

  5. EasyMPD found my windows computer successfully but it does not show the shared folders in my computer and keeps asking to enter "Usrname" and "Password".
It is because of "Password protected sharing" in your Windows computer. If you turn off "Password protected sharing" in your Windows computer, you can see the shared folder in EasyMPD without entering username and password. (Go to see how to turn off "Password protected sharing")

  6. It takes too long time or fails to do DB Update.
    a. You should suspect that there is some corrupted music files in Music directory. EasyMPD has a function to detect and remove the corrupted music files in Music directory. Go to see more detail.

    b. If you've installed JPlay in your Windows computer, it makes some trouble in file sharing in your computer. This program touches the registry of Windows and it cannot be fixed after unintalling JPlay from your computer.

    c. If you are using Windows 64bit computer, disabling Windows firewall will be helpful.

    d. If you are using Windows 7 or 8 computer, The way to improve Windows file sharing performance will be helpful.

    e. If you suspect that lack of physical memory in Alix causes this problem because you have an astronomical number of music files, you can extend the memory of Alix with attaching USB memory into Alix. EasyMPD uses USB memory or USB external HDD as virtual memory to extend Alix's physical memory. If you have already a USB external HDD attached to Alix, you don't have to use USB memory. The USB external HDD is already used as virtual memory. Go to see more detail.

  7. EasyMPD shows that the registered directory is successfully mounted. But there is no any music on my MPD Client.
    a. It is required to register at least two directories, DB Backup and Music directory. If you can see only BD Backup directory at "MPD -> Music Directories" in EasyMPD WEB GUI as like below image, it means you didn't register Music directory. EasyMPD does not scan DB Backup directory for searching music files.

DB Backup directory is used only for backing up DB. You should register Music directory separately, which contains your music files.

    b. MPD DB may not be created in some reason. Please let MPD create DB again with your favourite MPD Client program.
    c. If you are using MPod or MPad for MPD Client, please do "Refresh local cache" again.

  8. How to listen to internet radio with EeasyMPD?
    a. The way to listen to internet radio with the URL address of your favourite internet radio.
    b. The way to listen to internet radio with assistance of MPD Client.

  9. There is intermittent sound in playing and MPD Client is disconnected from EasyMPD frequently.
    a. If you play music during DB Update this phenomenon may occur. It will be fixed after DB Update is finished.

    b. If you paly a music file with higher bit rate than the bit rate your DAC supports this phenomenon may occur because MPD is trying to convert the music file to lower bit rate in playing and it increases CPU load of Alix. It is needed to upgrad your DAC or to covert the music file to lower bit rate format file before playing.

    c. If you connect two DAC to Alix or even if you connect one DAC to Alix physically but the DAC is recognized as two.
Some DAC has two USB chips in it for reason of compatibility. In this case one of the USB chip is older one and another is new one that support high bit rate. If you connect this DAC to Alix, EasyMPD automatically activate both USB chips in use. So if you play a music, MPD works for two steaming for both USB DAC chips. And furthermore if you play a high bit rate format music file, MPD should do more work to convert it to low bit rate for old USB DAC chip. These increase CPU load of Alix.
It's easy to fix this trouble. You can fix it with just using only the better one of the two USB chips. You can do it in your favourite MPD Client program. You can find a menu like "Output device" or "Audio Output" in MPD Client program. If it shows "ALSA0" and "ALSA1" and both are selected, you should select only one of them and should deselect another one. And you can find the better one if you test each output with high bit rate music files.

  10. I registered a Music directory that is located on USB external HDD attached to my Windows computer not to Alix. But strangely it frequently fails to be mount.
We don't know why but the USB external HDD connected to Windows computer is disconnected sometimes. So it not a good configuration that the USB external HDD in Windows computer is registered as a Music directory in Alix. It is highly recommended to connect the USB external HDD directly to Alix.

  11. Audio output device error in playing
    a. Please check if there is a problem in USB connection between DAC(or DDC) and Alix.
    b. There may be a problem in the USB input of your DAC or DDC.

  12. I'm using Alix as DLNA/UPnP Renderer and I'm using JRiver for DLNA/UPnP Media Server. I'm trying to play music at JRiver but there are so many troubles.
If you are using JRiver as DLNA/UPnP controller, it is true that there might be some problem you will face. Please do not use JRiver as DLNA/UPnP controller. Instead please use other DLNA/UPnP controller in your tablet PC or smart phone. Then most problem will disappear. And if you enable BubbleUPnP Server at EasyMPD and use it, you can use DLNA/UPnP more comfortably.

  13. I'm using Alix as DLNA/UPnP Renderer and I'm using foobar2000 for DLNA/UPnP Media Server. I'm trying to play music at foobar2000 but there are so many troubles.
If you are using foobar2000 as DLNA/UPnP controller, it is true that there might be some problem you will face. Please do not use foobar2000 as DLNA/UPnP controller. Instead please use other DLNA/UPnP controller in your tablet PC or smart phone. Then most problem will disappear. And if you enable BubbleUPnP Server at EasyMPD and use it, you can use DLNA/UPnP more comfortably.

  14. I'm using Alix as DLNA/UPnP Renderer. I stop playing the song in my DLNA/UPnP controller but Alix continues palying other song.
Please check if there is another DLNA/UPnP controller in your network, which is plaing the song.

  15. I'm using Alix as DLNA/UPnP Renderer. Playing is stopped frequently without reason.
Most of problem in using EasyMPD-renderer can be solved if you register EasyMPD-Renderer as a OpenHome Renderer in BubbleUPnP Server. First, activate BubbleUPnP Server at "DLNA(UPnP) -> BubbleUPnP Serve" in EasyMPD WEB GUI. And open BubbleUPnP Server configuration page and go to "Media Renderer" tab then select OpenHome Renderer for EasyMPD-Renderer.

  16. I'm using Alix as DLNA/UPnP Renderer and BubbleUPnP Server is activated in EasyMPD. But EasyMPD-Renderer is not shown in "Media Renderers" tab on BubbleUPnP Server configuration page.
Restart EasyMPD-Renderer at "System -> Status" in EasyMPD WEB GUI and check again a minute later.

  17. There was no problem until yesterday. But today MPD Client cannot connect to Alix.
    a. Open EasyMPD WEB GUI and check the status of MPD Player. If it is not running, restart MPD with "MPD Restart" button at the status page of EasyMPD WEB GUI.

    b. If MPD is running without fail, you should check if the device the MPD Client is running at is connected to the same router that Alix is connected to. The MPD Client device must be connected to the same router that Alix is connected to. If you are using smart phone for MPD Client you should check if the phone is connected with WiFi to the same router that Alix is connected to.

    c. The other reason is because the IP address of Alix is changed. Open EasyMPD WEB GUI and check if the IP address is different from the IP address of host (or server) setting in the MPD Client program. If they are different, you should change the IP address of host(or server) setting in the MPD Client program to the IP address of Alix.

  18. I'm using Alix connected to router with WiFi. But I think the WiFi connection is not stable.
You can check the connection of network with right end LED in front of Alix. If it keeps on without blinking, it means network failure. If there are frequent network failure, you should move the location of your WiFi router to remove the obstacles like wall or furniture between Alix and router. Or you should consider replacement of your router to more powerful one because your router may has weak wifi signal or the CPU is not enough for the traffic in your network.

  19. I'm using North Star or Chord USB DAC. Sometime it does not sound or produces a loud noise in song changes between different type format files.
Please open EasyMPD WEB GUI open EasyMPD and go to MPD -> MPD Configuration and select the check button in below image.

  20. My DAC is successfully recognized in EasyMPD and then the LED in the DAC shows that there is a signal from Alix. But it does sound nothing.
You can try above setting even if your DAC is not from North Star or Chord.

  21. My DAC is successfully recognized in EasyMPD. The LED in the DAC shows that there is no signal from Alix and it does sound nothing.
You may play the file with higher bit rate format than the bit rate your DAC supports. Please check again with lower bit rate music file.

  22. A song is playing in MPD Client program but there is no sound and it sounds tick noise continuously.
It is not usual but the electronic noise from the power supply adaptor of router is delivered to DAC through LAN and USB cable. Sometimes this problem occurs with the DAC that have no ability to protect this electronic noise. We experience this problem with Lindemann USB-DAC 24/192 and Audio Kid Respect. This problem can be fixed if you change the power supply adaptor of router to better one.
